Treating Freckles: Kissing’s from the Sun or Curses?

eye-1433449-638x425Freckles are generally circular spots on skin that generally emerge on fair-skinned people.  Unlike moles, freckles are flat on the skin.  They generally appear in hotter climates and when one has been exposed to a lot of light over a long period of time. They can come in many color ranging anywhere from red, yellow, tan, light-brown and even black.  The cause of freckles tends to correlated to the mechanism that makes our skin pigment color- called melanin.  Depending on your age, freckles can be age spots or simply a common occurrence from overexposure to sunlight during the summer time.  As you get older, you might notice your freckles fading. This has to do with the evolving melanin in our skin that develops overtime.  Freckles could also be the result of a hormonal imbalance, genetics and skin cancer- all possibilities to consider.  What are some ways we can reduce the freckles we have now – whether they be age spots or a seasonal occurrence?

  1. Organic home-made skin bleachers.  Lemon juice has been used for centuries in beauty as a way to lighten things up- whether it be lightening hair to a sunny blonde or getting rid of freckles.  It’s important that if you decide to use lemons on your problem area, to follow up with a moisturizer so that the acidity of the lemons doesn’t dry out your skin- especially for those with sensitive skin.  To make your own face mask for this, you want to gather sugar and one sliced lemon (into halves).  Sprinkle about a half teaspoon of sugar onto the lemon halve, the part that is moist.  Proceed to rub on the problem area for only a couple minutes.  You want to repeat this procedure about 1-2 times a week depending on how your skin reacts to it.  As an additive bonus, you get the exfoliating mechanism as well with the sugar.  You can do this same process with other organic foods as well, things such as: papaya, strawberries, onions, sour cream,
  2. Retinoids.  You can find a lot of products in your local beauty department store that contain retinoids.  Retinoids are used in anti-aging treatments and they can also be used to treat severe acne, but either way they act toward one goal-renewing damaged skin in order to unveil fresher new skin.  If you have freckles in your older years, or if you spend a lot of time in the sun throughout your lifetime, this may be your best bet.
  3. Surgery. If you’ve exhausted all other options, surgery may be the safe alternative.  Much of a penny pincher than other methods, this is the sought out permanent method to ban your sun kisses for good.  Find a certified dermatologist to give you the clear and to talk about your concerns before you follow through. There are a couple of options- laser surgery, cryosurgery or a chemical peel.

A Note About Prevention

If you were able to successfully get rid of your freckles, or simply don’t want to gain more throughout time- practice preventative measures. These include wearing sunscreen everyday on any part of your body that will be exposed to sunlight during the day-even if it’s from just driving your car to work every day or working next to a window. Aim for a broad spectrum sunscreen that has at least an SPF of 15. Reapply every 2 hours that you are exposed.
